Dining Room Floor Workover |
|
| |
I'm not exactly sure what this section of floor was cut out for as the cold return is on the opposite wall. This is all the way through the surface flooring and the subflooring. I had to rebuild the sub floor in that section since it was just a hole to the basement from there. |
| |
After rebuilding the sub floor I had to
patch in new red oak. It's all tongue n groove so you really have
to work a good sized area. I brought it in from the wall about a
foot and a half and ran it the length of the room.

This is the heat and ac vent. I've never seen
them like this in any other house. They're in four rooms here. Since
I had this one off to do the flooring I stripped it of the six layers
of paint. This revealed ventilation holes almost twice the pre strip
size. I primed this and gave it a fresh coat of paint to prevent corrosion
to the exposed metal surface.

Here is Regis Christ Superstar giving us a
shot of the hardwood flooring conditions. He's pointing out the years
of paint splatter, dog urine stains and general wear and tear from
previous owners.
|
| |
The upkeep was minimal and when it was done
it was poor quality work. Uneven applications of sealer over unclean
flooring. a

| |
Here is a stripped section. These stains are
from dog urine. These black stained areas will not come out. I've
tried bleaching, Vineger, chemical stripping agents and sanding. This
will be the best this gets. a

While I would consider this a night and day
comparison, The overall quality of the flooring and the damage still
left leads me to think I won't get away with just a clear sealer and
that I might actually go with a darker brown stain first to even the
whole floor out.a
|
| |
I am undecided as yet and need a full weekend
of hot dry weather to do the final belt sand at which point I can
decide the best finishing option.a
|
| |
Ok..ok..ok I went to rent the drum sander,
found you have to rent another smaller sander to use in conjuction
with that. The added costs for different grits of paper, the machines,
the sealer and stain plus the money I've spent on it already I'd had
enough. I looked at laminate flooring and decided that'd be the way
to go. Here it is.a

I just touched up the base boards and new
moulding I put down and threw down this new rug. That's about it for
this room FINALLY!
